Moving toward sustainability requires action on many fronts.  The following links demonstrate some aspects of sustainability.  We’ll add to this list as we find resources that may be of interest to you and welcome your suggestions of resources to add.

BOOKS

Conservation Development: Creating Value with Nature, Open Space and Agriculture
The beneficial impact of conservation development as way to both accommodate population growth and save land in outlying suburbs and rural areas is highlighted in this book by Edward T. McMahon of the Urban Land Institute.  While many smart growth publications focus on the urban environment, this book is more relevant to Kauai’s desire to maintain its rural character.

The Value of Hawaii: Knowing the Past, Shaping the Future
This book, edited by Craig Howes and Jonathan Kay Kamakawiwo‘ole Osorio, was published in April 2010 by University of Hawaii Press.  It’s a series of essays by Hawaii community, education and business leaders intended to foster discussion.

The Blue Economy – 10 Years, 100 Innovations, 100 Million Jobs
This book by Gunter Pauli was a project to find one hundred of the best nature-inspired rigorously-reviewed technologies that could effect the economies of the world, while sustainably providing basic human needs – potable water, food, jobs and healthful shelter.

Explores the growing practice of transit-oriented development (TOD) and its implications for community development. The issue is available online.

Unstill Waters: The Fluid Role of Networks in Social Movements
Robin Katcher of the Management Assistance Group (MAG) describes ways in which loose networks function to make a strong social movement. (from The Nonprofit Quarterly)

Global Warming – Dire Predictions for the Year 3000
This article by Wynne Perry, Live Science Senior Writer, presents a startling outlook related to global warming, discussing two potential scenarios extended out to the year 3000.  Imagining we are in the year 3000, one scenario looks at what would happen if we had eliminated all excess carbon dioxide emissions by 2010.  The second scenario looks at impacts if we don’t eliminate excess carbon emissions until 2100.  The possible outcomes send a powerful message about the need for local, national and global policies and responses.

PRESENTATIONS

PACE and Beyond – January 12, 2011
Cisco DeVries, who has been a leader in crafting rules for Property-Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) in California, made a Powerpoint presentation to the Kauai County Council describing the initiative and challenges in implementing it.  It may be a mechanism for making residential clean energy improvements by spreading out payments through a temporary increase in the owner’s property tax assessment.

REPORTS

Managing Without Growth
Peter A. Victor provides three main arguments why developed countries should consider managing without growth and explores various growth scenarios.  Challenging most mainstream thinking, he provides some compelling ideas.

Healthy Community Design Smart Growth Checklist
This checklist, created by the State of Hawaii Department of Health Built Environment Working Group, focuses on public health elements that should be integrated into land use and community planning and design to build healthier communities.

Sustainable Community Development Code – A Code for the 21st Century
Rocky Mountain Land Use Institute’s code framework provides background information, examples of codes, concrete advice and steps to take in establishing or revising development codes for areas of concern in community development, such as energy, transportation and livability.

Climate Momentum Simulation
Climate Interactive presents a simulation of what happens to climate, sea level and emissions when various scenarios are instituted.
