Support for Public Education
Inspire a child to learn! The Department of Education is recruiting people for the Community Volunteers in the Classroom program. Launched in January 2007 by Kauai Planning & Action Alliance in collaboration with the DOE, the program provides support for teachers and one-on-one and small group tutoring for children and youth. Time requirements for volunteers are fairly flexible. You can assist from one to five days a week, for two hours per day or more. Just complete an application, then the DOE will contact your references and conduct a brief background check. You will then be matched with a teacher, task, and time that will be most convenient and rewarding for you.
Helping a student to solve an academic problem or sharing an “aha” discovery can be one of life’s unforgettable moments. For more information, contact Bridget Arume, PCNC Coordinator, at 621-6972 x116 or download the APPLICATION (Adobe Acrobat Downloadable File) now.
Ceiling Fan Project. Learning can be difficult when the classroom is hot! In 2007, KPAA assisted King Kaumualii Elementary School secure funding to install ceiling fans in 17 classrooms. Funding from the Hawaii 3Rs program and the Kapaa Rotary was matched with lots of volunteer assistance to wire the classrooms and install the fans, along with financial support from the Kapaa Rotary Club. Students now enjoy a more comfortable learning environment.
