After checking out more of the details regarding the Innovation Fund grant process, I believe the proposed idea would be a good fit as it falls under the area of "innovation in the processes and platforms used to get things done." I'm not sure what manpower needs it would take to build a site similar to Climate Solutions from scratch. I like the idea of a community calendar (to inspire and education individuals and communities) however the strength of that tool will depend heavily on the person who monitors it and ensures the validity of the information posted. The easier route would be to let anyone and everyone post info on meetings and events but I worry that kind of approach may dilute the usefulness of the tool. The overall website as a community resource is exciting.

Thanks, Mason. You're right, this doesn't go far enough. This idea is so new I know I didn't articulate it fully yesterday. One of the ideas that came up in the SAT is creating multi-media campaign. This could be the focus of the Innovation Fund and could include the website, radio PSAs (already being worked on by the SAT with donated air time), a contest to have college and middle and high school students produce video PSAs on sustainability for Ho'ike (this has been done at a couple of mainland colleges and I plan to talk with Helen about it Tuesday), and partner with youth organizations such as Boys and Girls Club and Leadership Kauai to foster dialogue among youth on the type of future they would like to see and their ideas on how to achieve it. There could be other ideas as well that would emerge from the collaboration to plan the Innovation Fund application. Does this hit the innovation mark better?

Aloha Diane,
I believe this is a good starting place for this grant. Meaning, I like this idea. I do believe it will need constant attention from a dedicated staff or contractor. I also see a need to take this idea further into the community to ensure that there is outreach to a wider audience. It seems to me there will be a need for this movement to meet or commit to some action down the road. I'm still struggling to find the innovation in this proposal. I feel like it may need a new way of thinking, communicating and acting. I'll need more thought into it. Mahalo for all your work.

Aloha, Diane, and thank you for the terrific KPAA blog. Looking forward to reading about conservation development, and especially to seeing the economic benefits for landowners quantified. In view of Kauai's Agricultural Lands of Importance process, this book could be most timely. Thank you for pointing it out.
